ENGLISH CUAUHTEMOC Pre-hispanic figure in obsidian stone inlaid with abalone shell and nacar shell.     Size:   High 12.5 cm, Wide 9.5 cm, Large 6 cm  Weight 595 g                   CUAUHTEMOC             (1496 – 1552) Born in Tenochtitlan, son of Aztec sovereigns. Since he was 3, he is educated like a Mexican Prince. He was the 11th. and last Aztec Emperor of Mexico. His name means: The Eagle that Descended. Married to a Moctezuma’s daugther, in 1521 was elected sovereign of the Aztecs. In spite of his youth, he showed to be a great warrior chief. He resisted heroicly until he was taken prisioner by Hernán Cortéz. The eager Spaniards wanted him to reveal the place in where they could find  secret treasures, so they burned  his feet; but nothing was obtained. Los españoles deseosos de que revelase el lugar en donde se encontraban los tesoros secretos, lo sometieron a tormento quemándole los pies; pero nada obtuvieron. Cuauhtemoc es considerado prototipo del valor patriota y de la lealtad guerrera.

Ascendió al trono en el 615, a los 12 años, y gobernó sesenta y ocho años. Durante su largo reinado convirtió a Palenque en la ciudad más importante ya que tuvo un gran crecimiento económico, social y arquitectónico. Ya mayor, sintiendo cercana la muerte, inició la construcción de su templo funerario hacia el año 675 d. C.. Pakal murió el año 683 d.C., a los 80 años de edad.

Desde la niñez se inculcaba al pueblo azteca el espíritu guerrero; a raíz del  nacimiento, el varón recibía armas que sus propios padres ponían en sus manos ejecutando los movimientos que su manejo requería. Más tarde, en el telpochcalli, lo adiestraban en el manejo de ellas y acompañaba en las luchas, a manera de escudero, a un guerrero experimentado. Además, la carrera militar proporcionaba prestigio; los guerreros que lograban capturar mayor número de víctimas, futuros sacrificados, obtenían grandes honores y tenían derecho a usar trajes más ornamentados según el número de cautivos que hubieran hecho, al pertenecer a las órdenes militares de los Caballeros Jaguares o de los Caballeros Águilas y en caso de proezas excepcionales, podían recibir como premio concesiones de tierras o retribuciones especiales de su calpullí. El guerrero, por otra parte, creía que, si llegaba a morir en combate, su alma iría a uno de los mejores lugares en el paraíso de Tláloc
